Snort as an example of IDS

Executive Summary:

Recently, the importance of network security has increased significantly. Many governments and corporations have become depended fundamentally on the use of networks in daily transactions. E-government and e-commerce and similar terms have become one of the concepts which are heard on a daily basis, all of them depend mainly on a secure network. To keep the pace with this evolution in network security, there are many mechanisms to increase network security and which have been developed by experts in this field. An intrusion detection system (IDS) is one of these advanced mechanisms, which records all the information of attacking attempts.

The importance of this collected information by IDS is that it can be used to increase the level of network security, find out about the network attack attempts inside the network as well as outside the network. Snort is the most commonly used as IDS that has been discussed in this paper from different aspects.
